Traditional Santa Experience

What is a Traditional Santa
Traditional Santas

On December 14, 1940, The Detroit News printed an article (that was run nationally through the Associated Press) by their motion picture editor Harold Heffernan, on Santa’s appearance called "Hollywood Suggest Uniform Conception”. The legendary make-up artist Max Factor, Jr. and other Hollywood elite make-up artists came together
Charles W. Howard
to make some rules to make all Santa actors as similar as possible. They believed that the illusion of Santa must be kept at all cost. These artists came up with a chart called the Standardized Santa Chart.

Now remember this is 1940 so the measurements were taken from the medium height and weight factors of the day. And I quote, “The make-up experts pointed out that Santa’s suit, boots, hat, and belt have been standard for years. Their concern was the make-up, hair length, and size of the man portraying the Jolly Old Elf. Following are this tips that Hollywood will use for years. The characterization should be aged to around 70 years of age. All make-up created should have this in mind. The whiskers, hair, and moustache should be of pure yak hair with a definite wave and curl with a minimum drop of 12” and a maximum drop of 16”. (That’s for the whiskers measured from the lower lip.) ir should be shoulder length. Santa should have matching bushy eyebrows with a little salt and pepper look. Highlight the nose with #14 red rouge. The height should be no shorter than 5’9” and no taller than 6’0”. Weight should range from 180 lbs to 215 lbs. The padded girth would be 48” to 52”. The make up wizards pointed out that a Santa body type would be similar to W.C. Fields and Wallace Berry.” End of quote. Boy, have times changed. A maximum weight of 215 lbs! That had to have been way before breakfast!

Going through my old marketing publications I came across this interesting take on Santa from an advertising pro. Enjoy! “Take Marketing Tips from Santa Claus by Robert Fore. Santa Claus is more than just a jolly fat man in a red suit. When you think about it, he is a marketing genius. Everybody knows him or knows about him. You think Christmas... you think Santa. Think reindeer...thin

k Santa. Think sleigh bells ringing”...you got it...you think Santa! Santa is synonymous with Christmas, toys, trees, candy canes, and gum drops all kinds of stuff, yet he accomplished this without a press agent, or even a press kit for that matter. He never made a single, solitary cold call to sell himself and his wares. And he never ran an image ad, not even a small classified. And publicity? Santa generates lots of publicity - movies, cartoons, and satellite tracking on the nightly news... You name it, Santa's got it.
